Welcome to a new series of posts on the W.Polah blog, where we explore the world of unusual and original firearms. For centuries, gunsmiths have been not just craftsmen but true artists, pushing the boundaries of engineering to create masterpieces that are as beautiful as they are ingenious. These are not your typical weapons; they are hidden gems of history and design, some so discreet they could be mistaken for everyday objects.

In this series, we will take a deep dive into the most fascinating and bizarre firearms ever conceived, from historical marvels to modern-day creations that defy convention. Get ready to discover the secrets behind spy gadgets, the history of tiny pistols disguised as rings, and the artistry behind miniature weapons.

So, are you ready to open the vault of gunsmithing secrets and uncover the incredible stories behind these masterpieces? Let’s begin our journey into the world of truly unique firearms.

This creation is inspired by some of the most curious and original designs from the past. When I first conceived of this miniature, I was captivated by the history of ring pistols from the 19th century. This was a time when gunmakers, particularly in France and Belgium, pushed the boundaries of what was possible, creating tiny, concealable weapons that were as much a fashion statement as a means of self-defense.

The most famous of these historical pieces was the “Le Petit Protector.” This manually operated pepperbox revolver was often mounted on a ring made of German silver. There was even a smaller, daintier version, charmingly named the “Femme Fatal,” which was marketed to ladies.

I imagine these tiny revolvers, barely larger than a fingertip, were the talk of high society gatherings. A woman could wear one to a ball or a dinner party, a subtle and elegant form of personal security. This is what truly fascinates me—the blend of exquisite jewelry design with remarkable engineering.

As a miniature gunsmith, I see myself as part of a long tradition of artisans who view weapons not just as tools, but as wearable art. The Ring Gun Revolver is a perfect example of this philosophy.
Our Ring Gun Revolver is a modern homage to this lost art. Just like its historical predecessors, it is a fully functional revolver, a true marvel of miniature craftsmanship. Every detail is crafted—the delicate trigger on the band, the cylinder, and the realistic action of the hammer. It’s a piece that tells a story of innovation, and a testament to the idea that true artistry knows no bounds.

Card Gun Pistol

Unlike our Ring Gun, which draws from a long 19th-century lineage, the concept of a pistol shaped like a credit card is a very modern twist on the art of concealed firearms. While the idea of hiding a weapon in plain sight is as old as gunsmithing itself—think of cane guns, knife pistols, and even pen guns from centuries past—the Card Gun takes this to a whole new level of sleek, contemporary design.

The most famous real-world example is a clever modern firearm called the “LifeCard,” which first appeared in the 21st century. Its genius lies in its simplicity. When folded, it is no larger than a stack of credit cards, a completely unassuming object that could rest in a wallet. But with a single swift motion, it unfolds into a single-shot .22 caliber pistol.

It’s a design born from the idea that a tool for personal safety should be as portable as your phone or your keys, always there when you need it, without any burden.

This incredible innovation is what inspired me to create our miniature Card Gun. I was fascinated by the challenge of recreating such a minimalist and functional design in a 2mm pinfire scale.

Our model perfectly captures the original’s discreet elegance and ingenious engineering. It’s a testament to how even in the digital age, the art of the miniature remains relevant, preserving the spirit of innovation that defines both past and present.

Pen Gun Firearm

Historically, pen guns were favorites of intelligence agencies across the globe, including the CIA, KGB, and MI6. These single-shot devices, often chambered in small calibers like .22LR or even custom-made rounds, were designed for extreme close-quarters use or as a last-resort self-defense tool.

Their primary advantage was their complete invisibility in plain sight. A pen is an object that raises no suspicion, making it ideal for infiltration or covert operations where traditional firearms would be impossible to carry.

One of the most intriguing aspects of pen guns is their association with actual spy lore. While specific documented instances of their use in assassinations are rare and often remain classified, the threat and potential of a pen gun were powerful. Tales abound of operatives carrying them as a silent solution to unexpected threats or as a means to extract themselves from a compromising situation.

One of the most iconic and discreet firearms ever conceived: the Pen Gun. At W.Polah, we take immense pride in recreating these marvels of miniature engineering, and our Pen Gun is a tribute to a fascinating, often thrilling, chapter in weapons history.
For me, creating our miniature Pen Gun is about more than scale accuracy; it’s about capturing that essence of intrigue and historical significance. It’s a tribute to the human capacity for innovation, even in the most dangerous of circumstances. And it reminds us that sometimes, the smallest objects hold the biggest stories.

Golden Derringer

Golden Derringer

This was made possible by the skill of our jewelers, who created a true masterpiece: a setting made of sterling silver 925, a gold derringer with ivory grips, and even a decorative lid with a sapphire.

When I look at this ring, I see more than just a piece of jewelry. I see a story embodied in metal. It is a symbol that art has no limits and that innovation can be born even on the smallest scale. We took an example from the past, rethought it, and created something truly unique that belongs to the present.

Thank you for taking this journey with me. Our trip through the world of unusual weapons is not yet over. Still, today we can proudly state: we created not just a miniature, but a living legend.

I had an ambitious idea—to create a pistol that would be even smaller. This became a real challenge. After countless hours of work, experimentation, and perfecting every detail, we achieved the incredible.

We created the world’s smallest firing pistol. This little one, which operates with 0.8mm pinfire cartridges, became the pinnacle of our technical art.
